Knowledge Facts

Being able to perform on a musical instrument takes time and the children cannot move on to the next step until they have mastered, and can recall, important elements of their learning. Therefore every lesson begins with a ‘Total Recall’ session in which children can share what they remember from the previous lesson; the previous unit; and the previous years.

Implementation

chain-links
  • All lessons are planned using our music skills progression so that knowledge is taught horizontally across the year group and skills are progressed vertically across the key stage, resulting in diagonal learning.
  • Lessons offer a range of musical genres with a wealth of opportunities to develop skills in performing, composing, listening and evaluating music.
  • Children are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control.
  • The musical elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, dynamics, tempo and timbre are embedded in classroom activities, ensuring skills are developed and built upon from previous year groups.
  • Music provision is further enhanced through our weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances throughout the year, our knowledgeable and skilled peripatetic teachers, our First Access tuition, our Rock Steady music provision and our whole school enrichment days.

Opportunities

This asset allows us to run a weekly choir/folk band named the ‘Carbeile Pasties’, and termly afterschool clubs in Samba Band, Recorder ensemble and Theatrical Singing Club.

Assessment

In addition to our Total Recall quizzes, which take place during every lesson, Children will have developed skills in either composition or performance by the end of every half term. Teachers record the results of these performances and are able to assess just how far the pupils have progress and note where further attention is need to be focused.
