Design and Technology

Inspiring young minds to create, innovate, and problem-solve for a brighter future!

Design and Technology - Our Intent

chain-links

To engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to solve problems, innovate and invent products. They do this in a process that allows them to develop new practical skills and effectively use a range of technology to create high-quality outcomes.

Long Term Planning

Take a look at our new DT curriculum, we have recently chosen to follow the inspiring Design and Technology Primary Knowledge Curriculum (DT – PKC), which is designed to deepen children’s understanding of design and technology in our society while developing their knowledge, creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of context. Check out the DT-PKC Curriculum to see how our children’s learning in Design and Technology progresses as they move from infants to Year 3 to Year 6 and then into Key Stage 3.  All lessons have been carefully considered, planned to cater for the learning needs of all children and with careful links made wherever possible to previous year/next year learning in Design and Technology and in other subjects.

Our Big Questions (Medium-Term Plan)

Check out the DT PKC Curriculum , which details the units each year group cover including the skills and concepts learnt. In every year children complete a sew, build and cook unit, which enables Carbeile children to experience, grow and develop in all areas of DT.  The Year 1 and 2 units are also included, so teaching staff can see the progress that has been built on.

Our Medium term planning is being updated as we teach the PKC Curriculum, check out the lessons so far….

Forever Facts

The answers to all of our ‘Big Questions’ form our Forever Facts. This is the knowledge that we think our children need to remember in future years, well beyond when they have left their year group and when they have left Carbeile Junior School. We have ‘Total Recall’ in all lessons, quizzing the children about past weeks, past topics and even past years learning.

Implementation

chain-links
  • All lessons are planned using the DT PKC Curriculum, the scheme is designed to be a ‘progression model’ by specifying the knowledge we want children to learn, ordering it coherently and building in opportunities to check that children are remembering what they have been taught. The aim of this DT curriculum is for pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the important and integral role which design and designed products play in our society. In doing so, they will be using their knowledge, creativity, and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.
  • The curriculum is split into three different areas: ‘cook’, ‘sew’ and ‘build
  • We design for a purpose, using research to examine existing products.
  • We encourage the children to take risks in their designs, we let their choices and innovation lead the design process.
  • We design in different ways and with cross curricula links such as using computer aided design (CAD) in computing.
  • We evaluate our designs critically, we always look for potential improvements and next-steps.
  • We use our ‘total recall’ time at the start of topic and Design and Technology lessons to develop the children’s long-term memory on specific Design and Technology Forever Facts.

Opportunities

Speaking and listening is incredibly important in Design and Technology. Our children work collaboratively in the design process and create products as a team.

Home Learning

chain-grey

There could be an element of Design and Technology within your child’s topic home learning tasks, which are set every half term.  Please help encourage your child’s enthusiasm and enjoyment in Design and Technology by supporting them with this home learning.

Impact

chain-links

Children will develop their skills, creative thinking and knowledge over the four years. Our Design and Technology curriculum will develop the practical skills of the children, preparing them for later life. Our use of innovative technology opens doors for our children to a high-tech future.

We deepen the children’s understanding of how design affects our world. We champion innovation and nurture the children’s creative solutions to the future’s design questions.

Assessment

chain-links

In Design and Technology, we assess children through a mix of self-reflection, project evaluation, group work, and individual assessment. Self-assessment helps them reflect on their progress, while project evaluations focus on creativity and problem-solving. Group work fosters teamwork and peer feedback, and individual assessments track skill development and understanding. This approach ensures each child grows in confidence and ability.
